Today Marvel revealed that writer Donny Cates and artist Geoff Shaw (the minds behind the wildly popular “Thanos Wins” story) will be reuniting for a new Guardians of the Galaxy series. That announcement was accompanied by this massive teaser image featuring some three dozen cosmic heroes:
This teaser is notable for featuring not just the traditional five Guardians (Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Groot) but also the original 31st Century incarnation of the team, members from Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s Guardians run, the Shi’ar Imperial Guard, the Starjammers and other cosmic heavy-hitters like Beta Ray Bill, Silver Surfer, Galactus, Super-Skrull and Howard the Duck. Even Cosmic Ghost Rider, the futuristic version of Frank Castle, looks to be playing a role in this book.
It’s unclear whether this massive character lineup is meant to represent the new Guardians roster or if these are merely characters who will factor in Cates and Shaw’s stories in some way. We do know, however, that this teaser will appear at the end of the one-shot special Thanos Legacy #1 this week, so that issue may offer a better idea of what to expect from this relaunch.
Marvel is currently without a Guardians of the Galaxy comic. The series ended earlier this year, with writer Gerry Duggan transitioning from a traditional Guardians comic into a series of crossover events like Infinity Countdown and Infinity Wars. The latter series has already resulted in the death of Thanos and the reveal that Gamora has stolen the Infinity Stones and become the villain known as Requiem. Infinity Wars is also spawning a spinoff series called Asgardians of the Galaxy, featuring heroes like Valkyrie, Angela, Skurge, Thunderstrike and Throgg.
